Where Students in Grades 3-12 Experience "The Arts"

During the camp students selected art forms to study and create projects under
the instruction of North Dakota artists.  Guest art instructors for 2010 were:
Guillermo Guardia, Ceramics;  Adam Kemp - Miniature Golf Course Sculptures;
Sue Olson - Mosaic; Jessica Christy - Collage;
Josh Hagen and Michelle Lynch Hagen - Drawing; Jessie Palczewski, Dupree SD

Performing art classes are under the direction of the Summer Arts Safari, a program
of Summer Arts Stages which is a nonprofit organization from East Grand Forks MN.
In bringing the excitement of the arts to students, Safari believes involvement
includes not only performance, but also learning more about various aspects of the
art-making process.  The Safari mission fits in perfectly with the Nelson County Arts
Council’s youth camp where both visual and performing art sessions are available.
Safari Troupe Members for 2010 were:  Amanda Zimmerman,  Jill Useldinger,
Cory Carivau, Alyce Stokke, and Alex Fairchild.

Lakefront Refuge

During their found objects sculpture
class with Adam Kemp, the students
created several sculptures that can be
viewed on the miniature golf course and
in front of the pavilion, but none are
more colorfully delightful than their
hidden Lakefront Refuge.  I was only
given the general direction in which to
seek out the little sanctuary and its
accompanying sturdy adult size chair.
My five-year-old grandson and I were
delighted when our hunt brought into
view a flourish of color nestled among
the trees overlooking the lake.  We
spent half an hour sitting on the
benches of the little shelter (created to
fit all sizes) and the chair talking and
enjoying the lake view and the seclusion
the little lakefront property offered us.

We invite you to take a stroll and locate
this fanciful composition.  Clue: The trail
is near the small shelter to the west of
the pavilion.  If you locate the Lakefront
Refuge, email

will post your comments.
