Where Students in Grades 3-12 Experience "The Arts"

70 students attended the Stump Lake Fine Arts Youth Camp the week of August 4 through August 9.  During
the camp students select two art forms to study and create projects under the instruction of North Dakota
artists.  Guest art instructors for 2008 were: Jennifer Porter, Bottineau – paper mache and batik;  Sue Olson,
Binford – mosaic; Anise Dahlquist, New Rockford – painting; Jeanne O’Neil, East Grand Forks – repousse
and Adam Kemp, Grand Forks – abstract bison and benches.  The bison and benches will be permanently
placed at the Stump Lake Park and in Pekin.  A must see!!  You can also view fish sculptures that the
students created in the Stump Lake Park Café.

Performing art classes are under the direction of the Summer Arts Safari, a program of Summer Arts Stages
which is a nonprofit organization from East Grand Forks MN.  In bringing the excitement of the arts to
students, Safari believes involvement includes not only performance, but also learning more about various
aspects of the art-making process.  The Safari mission fits in perfectly with the Nelson County Arts Council’s
youth camp where both visual and performing art sessions are available.

While studying for the musical performances of The Velveteen Rabbit (grades 3-6) and Tom Sawyer (grades
7-12) the students were instructed in creative dramatics, theatre games, movement and music.  Safari
Troupe Members for 2008 were: Misti Koop, Amanda Zimmerman, Jordan Wolfe, Ashley Hovey, Debra
Berger, and pianist Annette Hovey.

Intermission music was performed by pianist, Jason Schlichting of Uvalde TX , an 11th grade student
attending the camp.

Also, thank you to Craig Silvernagel for designing the new Stump Lake Fine Arts Youth Camp logo that is at
the top of this page.  Craig is the husband of Missy Silvernagel, an NCAC board member, and is a co-owner
of Big Sky Branding, located in Grand Forks, ND.  Craig drew the picture of the pavilion from a photo, the
lake and the ripened fields surrounding the it are represented in the blue and gold colors.
